Amorgos Voyage

Sea kayaking expedition from Paros to Amorgos island. We paddled from Paros via Naxos and Koufonisia islands to Amorgos island. The weather was far from perfect, with heavy swell and the NW wind blowing at 20 knots. We camped in the southern tip of Naxos and then we paddled to Ano Koufonisi. We spent a night in Kato Koufonisi and we departed to Amorgos the next morning. Beaufort scale: Force 4, gusting 5, 2-3 meter waves.


It was difficult to navigate the confused seas at the North cape of Keros. The crossing is exposed to the Donousa-Ikaria strait that is known for its rough waters and strong currents. Winds are gusty and the seas are always heavy and confused.


In addition, the steep cliffs of Keros island reflect the heavy swell and clapotis is definitely not fun. The crossing is challenging and advance sea kayaking skills are needed. It took us 5 hours of paddling to cross to Katapola, Amorgos island. The current from the North Ikarian sea ran strong at 3 knots. From Katapola, we decided to paddle to Aigiali and spend the night there. Heavy seas and the meltemi slowed us down considerably with an average speed of 2 knots. Paddling around Nikouria islet was an experience to be cherished. Sea kayaking around Amorgos island is not for beginners or for the faint hearted.


Ταξίδι από την Πάρο στην Αμοργό με θαλάσσιο καγιάκ. Κωπηλατήσαμε από την Πάρο στην Αμοργό και κροσάραμε το μπουγάζι της Παροναξίας με πρώτο σταθμό τον Καλαντό. Από τη Νότια Νάξο ταξιδέψαμε προς Κουφονήσια όπου και διανυκτερεύσαμε.

Η Αμοργός ήταν ο επόμενος προορισμός μας. Ο καιρός είχε πέσει στα 4-5 μποφόρ αλλά το Αμοργιανό πέρασμα δεν αστειευόταν με τις ρεματικές του (μετρήσαμε το ρεύμα στους 3 κόμβους). Το ταξίδι κράτησε 5 ώρες με τον καιρό στην μπάντα ενώ το αντιμάμαλο της Κέρου μας δυσκόλεψε. Ταλαιπωρηθήκαμε αρκετά μέχρι να παραλλάξουμε την βραχονησίδα Βούλγαρη.

Αφού ξεκουραστήκαμε στα Κατάπολα, μετά από άλλες 5 ώρες κουπί και το φορτωμένο βοριά κατάπλωρα, φτάσαμε στην Αιγιάλη. Όπως είναι εύλογο, απαιτούνται καγιάκ με καλή ισορροπία και έμπειρα πληρώματα, που να διαθέτουν επαρκή ναυτοσύνη και φυσικά να έχουν τη δυνατότητα να τα κωπηλατήσουν, κάτω από δύσκολες καιρικές συνθήκες.
